Program Overview: KEF Medical Elective Program KMEP-2 (160 hours total)

Observerships are very important when it comes to residency applications for an international medical graduate (IMG). Finding a good program and navigating through the process can be daunting. Our KMEP-2 program aims to deliver a multifaceted experience to medical students in their final year before graduation. As part of their education, students are expected to enhance their proficiency in writing, speaking, and understanding the English language. This will enable them to communicate effectively with patients both in the outpatient and inpatient setting in the U.S. The second part of the program is a clinical observership providing the student with the opportunity to develop their clinical and analytical skills in assessing and treating patients.

Description Part 1: Technical English for Medical Doctors-80 hrs

The first component (of Part 1) is a rigorous and in-depth English language course focused on scientific and medical terminology. Medical students receive instruction in the appropriate use of medical terms, including proper English expression and pronunciation. As a result, they will gain a deeper understanding of common phrases, profession – specific terminology, and become more comfortable using English to communicate with professionals and patients effectively and accurately in clinical settings.

The second component (of Part 1) aims to offer a comprehensive understanding of the medical and allied health systems in the United States. In a series of workshops, participants will gain a comprehensive understanding of the health care system in the United States by analyzing and comparing clinical practices, services, and industries between countries. The aim of these workshops is to offer facilitated discussions with student-to-student interaction, where both student groups would have the opportunity to collaborate and learn. Read more

The third component (of Part 1) involves visiting hospitals in Orlando, Florida that specialize in different areas including the newly developed Lake Nona Medical City.

Performance evaluation (of Part 1)

Upon successful completion of this part of the program students will be awarded a Technical English for Medical Doctors Certificate from the college to recognize their achievement.

Description Part 2: Medical Elective Observership Rotations-80 hrs

This four-week clinical observership provides the student with the opportunity to serve as a sub-intern on a general medical service and allows the student an opportunity to further develop their skills in assessing and treating patients. The student is expected to function as an integral member of the medicine team, and to interact with the interprofessional team to provide optimal patient-centered care. The program aims to ensure a strong clinical experience, adequate teaching and supervision, and to meet realistic expectations for that of a future resident (regardless of discipline). Read more

Students learn to work across disciplines and professions on a healthcare team, effectively document and relay patient care information between other care providers and learn how to gather information to create a well-formulated assessment and plan within a patient care team.

Performance evaluation:

Students will be assessed by their preceptor based on direct observation, input from other physicians and residents, student procedure, attendance, case and topic presentations, and their patient write-ups. All participants will receive a Letter of Participation  of Completion. LORs are at the discretion of the doctors.
